Law Changes re Access to Personal Detail
As of 1 November 2010 a new law comes into effect which allows third parties access to your name and address details via your vehicle registration plates. Currently this can be done at a Post Office and you have to pay a small fee but after 1 November anyone will be able to look up your registration plate on the internet and get the details without paying.
You can elect not to have your personal details released by "opting out" if you want to. It doesn't cost anything to do this and the link below will take you to the correct page on the NZTA website.
Imagine if you have your car stolen and you have your garage door remote and a remote to turn your house alarm off. The thief can access your details from the internet and then go in and clean your home out as well as having taken your car. Not the ideal situation is it?
